Be born again

One of the best things about New Years day is that it divides up our lives in to neat packages and allows us to have a mental break from the year that was and everything in it.

It’s really just an ordinary day but there is something special about it. We see that clearly in the way we speak about life. We say things like “Ugh, last year was terrible” or “That year really ended on a high”. Nothing really changes on January 1 but it allows us to say “that’s over and done with” and now I am moving on to something new.

It’s all about getting a brand new start.

This week we started a teaching series on how God makes all things new and that starts with one idea:

Be born again

– Jesus

This idea of being born again it is the CORE of our faith. This idea never gets old. This is what makes Christians Christians and allows them to continue each day in relationship with God.

Being born again offers us an opportunity for a brand new start.

The Gospel of John records a conversation between Jesus and a religious leader of the time. The man was drawn to Jesus because of his signs and wonders but Jesus had more to share with him.

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”

– John 3:3

Jesus goes on to explain (and it’s worth reading for yourself) that we are born into a physical reality and what we sense, what we taste, touch, see, hear and smell are all part of that reality. But if you want to understand the spiritual reality, you need to be born of the spirit as well.

The conversation comes to an end with this well known passage of Scripture:

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.

– John 3:16

The truth of the matter is God offers us a brand new start through Jesus. He allows us to be born not just of the physical world but also of the spiritual world so that we can experience the fullness of God’s creation.

God wants you to have a brand new start. Not a fake one like new years where we just feel like something is different. God wants you to have a brand new start where you realize who you are, what he has done for you and how you are different when you come into his family.
